History of Linwood Parish Church
Linwood Parish Church was built in 1860 as a Chapel of ease. Prior to this the villagers had to travel to Kilbarchan, as Linwood came under that parish at the time. The foundation stone was laid on the 18 June 1859 and a box containing coins and newspapers of the day were placed in the cavity. The builder was David Jeffery of Johnstone. The church became a parish independent of Kilbarchan in 1880. In 1965, due to the ever expanding population of the town, the church moved to the present site in Clippens Road.

Presbyterianism in Scotland
Presbyterianism is a form of Christianity, primarily within the Protestant branch of Western Christianity. Presbyterianism traces its institutional roots back to the Scottish Reformation, led by John Knox. The word 'Presbyterian' refers to the form of Presbyterian ecclesiastical governance.
Presbyterian polity is a method of ecclesiastical governance typified by the rule of Courts of presbyters, or elders. A ruling elder is "ordained" by the minister and Kirk Session of the parish, and is answerable to the Kirk Session. Like a minister, an elder is "ordained" for life.
Unlike members of parish councils in other denominations, elders are understood to have pastoral responsibilities, which they carry out under the guidance of the minister. Usually a parish will be divided into elders' districts, and the elders are expected to visit the church members resident in their district on a regular basis. Elders also often assist the minister in the distribution of the elements at a formal Communion Service.
All elders are members of the Kirk Session. They may also be members of the higher courts of the church. Each Kirk Session appoints one of its members to attend Presbytery, and on average once every four years it appoints one of its members to accompany the minister to the General Assembly.
Each court appoints a Moderator and Clerk. The Court of Elders that makes decisions for the local church is a body called the Kirk Session. The Interim Moderator of Linwood Parish Church Kirk Session is Rev. Robbie McFarlane and the Session Clerk is Miss Lynn Ross.
Groups of local churches are governed by higher church courts known as Presbyteries. Linwood Parish Church is part of the Presbytery of Greenock and Paisley. The Moderator of the Presbytery of Greenock and Paisley is Rev. Maureen Leitch and the Presbytery Clerk is Rev. Alan Ward.
The General Assembly is the highest court of Presbyterian polity. Each Presbytery selects a number of its members to be commissioners to the General Assembly. The General Assembly is chaired by the Moderator of the General Assembly, who is elected to a one year term. The Moderator of the General Assembly 2006 was Rt. Rev. Alan McDonald.
